Which Kitchen Design is right for you?
The world of kitchen design is full of trends, styles, colors, and preference. Before getting caught up in the latest trend regarding kitchen design, take a step back and evaluate a few things that will help you in selecting the type of kitchen design that best works for you and will be a joy for you to work in.

What type of personality are you?
If you are refined, like cleanliness, organized, and structured, then you might want to consider the streamlined look of a professional kitchen design. If you are someone who likes a laid-back approach to food preparation and entertaining, with engaging visual elements, then you may wish to consider a kitchen design style that is more open and free with some rustic aspects and a more relaxed overall ambiance. Just because there is a particular trend showcased in a magazine doesn't mean it will be right for you or your style of living.

Once you have decided on what type of personality you are, then you can proceed toward a particular style of kitchen design. A few of the most desirable styles today include Traditional styles including Tuscany inspired, Country styles, European inspired Contemporary, and Transitional styles. These styles all have some similar elements which make up any kitchen such as appliances, cabinets, countertops, etc. There are also some distinct differences that characterize each kitchen design.

Traditional style kitchen design
A traditional style kitchen has an enduring quality about it, which can make this style of kitchen timeless. This style of kitchen design has been refined over time, and what is available today is a style that is practical and functional. Furthermore, it has adapted over time to become the place people gather to cook, eat, talk, and relax. The traditional kitchen is a cozy place that is warm and welcoming.

The traditional style of kitchen design is also highly customizable in terms of decoration to your specific tastes. Many of the most desirable traditional styles of today emulate various geographic regions around the world such as the Tuscany region in Italy. The traditional style can be easily adapted to give a more Tuscan kitchen design feel, which would include color, some rustic elements, simple wood cabinets and possible freestanding cabinets, possible distressed pieces, warm tile work on backsplashes and flooring, and abundant natural lighting.

Country style kitchen design
The country look is typically less complicated than traditional styles. This style, like the traditional, is based on old designs, but with a cleaner appearance. Some typical accents in the country kitchen design might include butcher-block countertops, hand-formed tile, freshly cut flowers and/or dry herbs, open display shelves, copper molds, hardwood floors, mason jars, a hanging pot rack, spice racks, distressed finishes, rough-hewn beams, candles, skirted sinks, wire-mesh cabinet doors, and patterned table linens.

The country kitchen design is one that is relaxing, comfortable, inviting. This kitchen, like the traditional, is a "lived in" room of the home. This kitchen can be extraordinarily or simply decorated, as long as there are many warm and natural details throughout. Modern small appliances are usually hidden from view because they don't fit the natural feel of the space. Depending on how the kitchen design is carried out, the country style can be adapted to the Tuscan and French country styles very successfully. The inviting details in the country style kitchen design hint to a life that is uncomplicated, natural, and content. It truly represents a relaxing place for the whole family.

European inspired contemporary kitchen design
The European inspired contemporary kitchen design can be described as "less is more." Everything in this kitchen design has a purpose. Design is evident, and look is balanced with practicality. Some people find this type of kitchen design cold and empty, while others see it as a perfect representation of order, efficiency, and streamlined attention to detail.

The materials that make up the Euro inspired contemporary kitchen include: granite or stainless-steel countertops, professional appliances, efficient lighting, and light-colored simple design wood cabinets, frosted glass cabinets can also be used. Floors can be concrete, stone, or light-colored wood. Solid areas of color along with clean lines and reflective finishes create a streamlined, simplistic but refined look. The idea that a Euro contemporary kitchen design has to be endless lines of polished steel is not the case. Today's Euro contemporary kitchen designs offer many elements that soften up and enhance the overall feeling of the space.

Transitional style kitchen design
Transitional kitchen design is interesting in that it involves the mixing of various elements from different design styles. A transitional style kitchen might have light colored cabinets offset by an island with dark cabinetry. The countertops for the kitchen might be lighter granite while the island has dark granite. The kitchen may have an overall country style with high end professional grade appliances in stainless-steel and larger, decorator tile for a backsplash. The basis of a transitional style kitchen design is that there really are no rules, you create an eclectic design of combining modern and traditional, country and contemporary to create something that is functional and works for your individual tastes.

Some typical elements that are mixed within a transitional style include: stone, granite, quartz countertops, dark and light stained woods - both on the floor and for use in cabinetry, use of stainless-steel appliances, various lighting sources including natural and both simple and/or decorative lighting, simple and/or more detailed cabinetry, and a myriad of hardware choices from dark to light, natural to synthetic, iron to metal.
